- Filosofia: Estocàstic, prové etimològicament del grec στοχαστικός, significa pertanyent, relatiu o caracteritzat per l'atzar. Un procés estocàstic és aquell que té un comportament no determinístic, l'estat següent és parcialment però no totalment determinat per l'estat previ. No és regit, per tant, per cap llei causa-efecte.
- Matemàtiques: En teoria matemàtica, un procés estocàstic és una successió de variables Xk aleatòries indexades per una variable o índex k, contínua o discreta. Cadascuna de les variables aleatòries del procés té una funció de distribució de probabilitat i les funcions de les variables poden estar correlacionades o no.
Les variables Xk prenen valors en un conjunt que s'anomena espai d'estats.
- Informàtica: En intel·ligència artificial, els programes estocàstics funcionen mitjançant mètodes probabilístics, és el cas de les xarxes neurals i els algorismes genètics.
